How we work

We embrace the ‘Lean Philosophy’. This is a combination of tools and steps that help us to progress as a business. It enables us to: improve quality, eliminate waste, continuously improve and support consumers. Lean is a transformational driver to improve the way we work and it’s used in all areas of the business.

History of Tangerine

In 2005, a management team with an established history in the confectionery industry acquired the UK confectionery division of Toms of Denmark. The facilities manufactured boiled sweets, marshmallows, gums and jellies and toffees. Later that year, Tangerine acquired the confectionery division of Burtons Foods and its modern facility in Blackpool, which made gums and jellies and Liquorice Allsorts.

Two years later, the business acquired Monkhill Confectionery. The two facilities in Pontefract and Monkhill’s York and Cleckheaton sites meant that alongside expanding our boiled sweets and liquorice provision, Tangerine was able to add popcorn to its portfolio. This helped it to become one of Europe’s largest sugar confectionery businesses and a leader in popcorn.

As we stand today, we have 6 sites providing a diverse range of capabilities across sugar confectionery and popcorn. This enables us to be highly competitive in both the UK and international markets.

Vision & Values

Our vision is for everybody to enjoy our tasty, high quality sweets and popcorn products, experiencing and building happy, lasting memories.

Remember buying your first sweet?  Your experiences in the sweet shop selecting your favourite treat from the jars above the counter? How about getting together as a family to enjoy a great family film and sharing the popcorn?  We’ve evolved today and sweets and popcorn are both what they used to be but also so much more.  Now we sell soft versions of your favourite traditional sweets, seasonal products with a mix of your classic favourites and popcorn is a trendy, tasty everyday snack to be consumed wherever you like.  We’ve stayed true to our roots but pushed on into the twenty first century.  We pride ourselves in delivering the highest possible quality confectionery products to be enjoyed by people of all ages.  The breadth and diversity of our  portfolio enables us to deliver a multitude of flavours, textures and formats to enjoy on various occasions.

Our values are to put the consumer and customer at the forefront of everything we do.

We work tirelessly to identify clear consumer needs within our categories so that we can be confident that our new products, existing product developments and overall focus is consistent with our loyal consumer base’ expectations.  We invest heavily in research and development to test recipes, packaging and new product ideas.  We also spend time in the local community and are passionate about making a difference.  We feature as part of relevant trade and consumer shows and exhibitions such as ISM and the Pontefract Liquorice Festival and we provide samples of our produce at various fairs and shows.  We always aim to work with our customers in a pragmatic, flexible and collaborative way.

We follow five key principles in order to stay true to our vision and values, these are integrity, respect, passion, pace and accountability.

Following these principles enables us to work in a high performing business team to ensure we deliver the very best for our consumers and customer.

Our Principles & Ethics

We believe that sound and responsible environmental energy management should be a priority. That’s why it’s integral to every part of our business. From the supply of our raw materials to manufacturing processes and facilities, distribution to the sale and consumption, we strive to protect the environment and reduce our carbon footprint.

In keeping with our philosophy, we aim to use 100% natural colours and flavours across the range. We ensure the palm oil we use is RSPO certified and we also look to remove all non-hydrogenated fat and where possible, salt.
